The Last Hurrah in Mallorca

Like every other morning, this one began with a crossfire of snoring accusations. With our flights home early tomorrow, the morning also featured a display of pre-flight anxiety from Dave, complete with second- and third-guessing his check-in, travel documents, flight notifications, packing, and baggage handling.

While Matt stayed behind to get some work done in the hotel room, Dave and I set off to explore Palma’s cathedral. Known as La Seu, it was completed in 1601 and is one of the tallest cathedrals in the world.

While waiting to go inside, Dave and I were treated to a Red Bull-sponsored motorcycle jumping event nearby.

We splurged on the audio tour headsets for the cathedral, but the experience was crap. The stops weren’t efficiently numbered from where we walked inside, and the numbers on the tablet didn’t match those on the signs.

The cathedral’s interior is undoubtedly huge and spacious, but I’ve seen prettier, more impressively illuminated cathedrals elsewhere.

Our tickets also gave us free entry to the Museum of Sacred Art next door, so we popped in for a quick look. Lots of old stuff, impressive if you like religious art.

Matt met us at the cathedral, and we walked together down to the marina to meet our catamaran tour. We joined the group, listened to the introductory briefing, and climbed aboard. We were just starting to eat snacks and mingle with the other passengers when The Matt Show™ began. With volume and personality dialed to 11, Matt made sure everyone knew he was there to have a good time.

As Matt made the rounds, Dave and I chilled out on the deck with drinks in our hands, the sun on our faces, and the wind in our hair. There really is something magical about that combination.

The boat took us out of the harbor a short way, past giant German cruise ships and just far enough to lose sight of the cathedral. We anchored near a small cave for a swim. Because there were others in the water, Matt jumped in. Then I follow with a dip in the Mediterranean. The group called out Dave for being the only one who hadn’t gotten in the water, but he responded by reminding people that he’s from Florida.

On the way back, we got wrapped up in conversation with an overly woke Canadian woman with strong opinions about politics, guns, Americans, and boyfriends. When the lecture about how privileged we are began, I completely checked out. Matt enjoyed dancing around her provocative comments, but I slowly disengaged, and Dave kept his mouth shut entirely.

Back at the hotel, I enjoyed my last Spanish sunset from the balcony.

Our final dinner in Mallorca was at Vandal. Another fabulous meal, highlighted by some truly exquisite spicy tuna and, of course, one more round of Cava sangria. Perfect for a final toast celebrating a great trip with great friends. And there was some talk about where we might go next year. Vietnam? Croatia? Oktoberfest?

As we were finishing up, some of the people from the catamaran happened to come into the restaurant, so we chatted with them for a few minutes. I was told that the girls thought I looked a lot like Neal McDonough. I don’t see it.

We called it a night and headed back to the hotel. We have some very early flights out of Mallorca tomorrow morning.
