A Fantastic Day in Hvar
A short ferry ride took us to Hvar, a long, skinny island just off the coast from Split. As we took a quick walk around the marina and tiny old town, sun beamed off the polished white limestone covering the ground. This is a place for sunglasses.
First activity was a walk up to the fortress. Why does the highlight in every town require a steep climb? The fortress offered the greatest panoramic view I have seen on this trip. Really quite beautiful up there. The Croatian architectural “look” is white buildings with orange roofs.
The group I’m traveling with continues to be awesome. Everyone’s really starting to open up and joke around and gel. I got everyone drinking rum and cokes now, and I also got everyone on board with my “J Points” scoring system, in which they each have the opportunity to earn points by doing good deeds or making my vacation better.
Our night was filled with eating, drinking, and dancing on a sunset cruise. An amazing experience.
Afterward, we packed into a tiny nightclub called Kiva Bar for more drinking and dancing. A perfect night. For all of us, Hvar has been the highlight of the trip so far.
This morning, we grabbed the high-speed ferry from Hvar to Dubrovnik. As I look out the window, rocky, mountainous and mostly undeveloped islands are floating by as we make our way south. The ferry is pretty packed, and our group is split up. I’m sitting with a Japanese family. Mom is coughing and sneezing without covering her mouth. Dad just took his shoes off. The youngest boy, maybe 9 years old, is sitting next to me and literally smells like shit.
With my days action-packed, it seems that the only time I can find to catch up on these blog posts is when I’m on some sort of transport. Finding decent wifi to post all my photos is another challenge. I’m falling way behind. 🙁
